Three Purposes of Medicare Supplement Plans and Why They Are Important

by Ross Martin

Medicare supplement plans exist to help retirees cover all of their medical expenses. There are some other reasons for the existence of these supplemental plans. It is important to know what these reasons or purposes are so that you know exactly what you are applying for and what you are getting when you sign up for Medicare.

To Cover Costs NOT Covered by Medicare

Regardless of the Medicare plan you select, you may be surprised to learn that each plan subtype does not cover all of the costs you might encounter in old age. Medicare generally covers most expected costs of healthcare for aging adults but not unexpected costs. These are costs related to rare forms of cancer, experimental treatments, and so forth. The supplemental plans help cover these more unusual costs.

To Cover Newer Medications

Old Medicare plans often list the medications they are willing to cover. Newer medications that may be more effective for your health issues are not covered unless they are listed specifically or listed as generics. (Many brand-new medications are not listed as generics and do not have a generic equivalent yet.) Medicare supplements that cover newer and unlisted medications are just one type of Medicare supplement plan that you will definitely want to add to your Medicare coverage so that you know your future medications are completely (or mostly) covered.

To Cover Emergency Procedures

Some emergency procedures, such as quadruple open-heart bypass surgery, may not be covered under your Medicare plan. These are extremely expensive procedures but also absolutely necessary procedures. You need to read the fine print on your Medicare plans to see whether emergency procedures of this magnitude are covered. If they are not, you will need to change plans or add a supplement plan to help cover some of the monumental costs associated with these life-saving emergency surgeries.

To Account for Possible Other Expenses for Which You Need Extra Coverage

There are always unexpected medical needs that require healthcare coverage. However, you cannot predict or know what will happen with your health when you sign up for Medicare. As such, it helps to be as fully covered as you can be so that surprise medical expenses do not catch you completely off-guard and drain away all of your savings and retirement funds. If you are not sure which supplemental plans you should get, talk to the Medicare representative about your options and any suggestions regarding pre-existing conditions that might help point you in the right direction.

About Me

About Jessica's Cosmetic Surgeries

Hello there! I'm Jessica Goodyear. I am an unofficial expert on cosmetic procedures--mostly because I've had a lot of them done. Some people judge me or think I'm fake, but I feel more like myself than I ever have before! It all started when I was a teenager. I broke my nose playing softball, and I had to have plastic surgery on my nose so that I could breathe properly. But my nose looked different afterwards, and I liked it better! Now I save up my money to get something done every few years. Whether it's teeth whitening or veneers, a little bit of liposuction, or new cheekbones, there's something so satisfying about letting your inner beauty shine out through your outer body. I started this site to help break the stereotypes about cosmetic surgeries and to talk about some of the health risks related to them. Check it out!
